Gary Coll's lawsuit against the Irish Government alleging exposure to dangerous chemicals during his service has been settled for €2 million. Coll, who worked in the Air Corps' avionics section, claimed 'tubbing' practices and inadequate safety measures led to debilitating health problems.

A former Air Corps member, Gary Coll, has reached a €2 million settlement with the Irish Government over claims he suffered debilitating health problems due to exposure to dangerous chemicals during his service. The case, which was scheduled to be heard in the High Court, resolved just before its start. Coll, who joined the Air Corps in 1991 at the age of 17, alleged he was exposed to harmful chemicals and solvents while working in the avionics section at Baldonnell, Co Dublin, until 1997.

He specifically accused the Air Corps of subjecting him to a practice known as 'tubbing,' where workers were submerged in a bath of unspecified chemicals and oil. Coll, who was once an accomplished athlete, claimed this exposure led to severe physical and psychological issues, including an inability to walk long distances without a cane. He also reported experiencing chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. \The Department of Defence denied all of Coll's allegations, including any negligence or breach of duty of care. They asserted that Coll did not suffer injury due to exposure and denied exposing him to dangerous chemicals. However, after years of legal wrangling and failed mediation attempts, the parties reached a settlement just before the trial was due to begin. Coll's solicitor, Denis Boland, stated that his client was relieved with the outcome and called it a 'happy resolution.' \This case is considered a landmark case for other Air Corps members who have also made similar claims. Campaigners view it as a test case and hope it will lead to greater accountability for the alleged misconduct within the Air Corps. Coll expressed his desire for an official apology from the Government for the harm inflicted upon him and his former colleagues. The case highlights the lasting impact of workplace hazards and the importance of ensuring safe working conditions for all employees
