Report: Former Astros utilityman Aledmys Díaz agrees to deal with A's
SAN DIEGO — Former Astros utilityman Aledmys Díaz is in agreement with the Oakland A’s on a two-year contract worth $14.5 million, according to the New York Post.
Díaz spent four seasons in Houston and blossomed into one of the team’s most valuable bench assets. He started games at six different positions across his Astros tenure and slashed .255/.313/.424 in 952 plate appearances. Houston acquired Díaz from the Toronto Blue Jays before the 2019 season as a replacement for Marwin Gonzalez. The 32-year-old Cuban quickly became a clubhouse favorite, but an extensive injury history limited his availability and forced both A.J. Hinch and Dusty Baker to exercise caution when deploying him. Díaz had six stints on the injured list during his Astros career that spanned 206 days.
Houston could turn to David Hensley and Mauricio Dubón in Díaz’s absence, but the team hasn’t ruled out exploring other options on the free-agent market.
