Quartet of Astros to play for Dominican Republic in World Baseball Classic

Astros pitchers Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu and Framber Valdez will play for their native Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in the springSAN DIEGO — World Series MVP Jeremy Peña will play for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic next March alongside three of his Astros teammates.

Peña, Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier and Bryan Abreu are all committed to play for their home country, according to Team Dominican Republic general manager Nelson Cruz. Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Rodney Linares, a former longtime Astros minor league coach, will manage the team. The Astros’ Dominican quartet will see some familiar faces during pool play, which is scheduled to begin March 11. Team Dominican Republic is in Pool D along with Team Venezuela, managed by Houston first-base coach Omar López. Jose Altuve and Luis Garcia have both committed to play for López.

Houston has nine major league players committed to play in the World Baseball Classic. Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly are part of Team USA while José Urquidy will pitch for Team Mexico. Team Venezuela will train at the Astros’ spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla. and play the Astros in an exhibition game on March 8 at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
