Photograph: Conor McKeownA former HSE manager who fantasised with other users of an online messaging service about raping children and making them cry was sentenced to six years in prison on Monday by a Circuit Court judge.

The earlier court was told O’Malley knowingly engaged in five online conversations with children under the age of 18 from Co Cork and Co Kilkenny. On Monday, Judge Garavan said O’Malley had shown an ongoing obsession with pornography and exploitation in a significant way. Describing the images as highly graphic, Judge Garavan said that ultimately the accused was a member of a type of paedophile ring – not by perpetrating sexual assaults – but by the sharing and distribution of children being sexually abused “in a way that amounts to torture”.
