Raffaele Imperiale, 49, pleaded guilty to mafia offences and was caged for 15 years and eight months by Judge Maria Luisa Miranda. He was one of 19 mafiosi who were handed down sentences totalling some 190 years
A former key ally of mob boss Daniel Kinahan has been locked up in Italy for more than 15 years - and had his multi million island in Dubai seized.
READ MORE: Former student who placed phone in bathroom of house he shared with other students avoids jail Italy now has control of the island as well as some €1.8 million in cash already seized from him - and Imperiale has also agreed to become a supergrass, or pentito, for Italian authorities. It’s understood he has already started spilling the beans on other members of the Camorra mafia group he led, as well as gangsters in the Netherlands.
Imperiale is known in Italy as the Van Gogh boss after two priceless paintings stolen from a Dutch museum were found at a village he owned in southern Italy in 2016. By that stage he was already living in Dubai, but was arrested there in 2021 and extradited to his native Italy a year later. Gardaí believe there is enough evidence to have the three Kinahans charged with directing a crime gang – an offence that carried a sentence of up to life in Ireland. Officers recently sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions asking for those charges to be laid – and the law officer is now examining it.
