Some are still battling to reverse the decision to take the town out of Lancashire

In 1974, Bolton was taken out of Lancashire under major reforms which saw it instead placed in the newly created Greater Manchester county. Half a century later, that decision remains contentious as locals battle with the town’s true identity.

Behind it, similarly impressive structures house the magistrates court and museum, but not far away the more modern elements of the town centre offer a less attractive appearance. The pedestrianised Deansgate offers a wide, car-free place to stretch the legs but those walking by told LancsLive that what’s lacking is better quality shops to occupy them.

And of course Bolton is also home to one of the quirkiest restaurants you’re likely to come across. An eye-catching sight along the A676, Steaks on a Plane serves street food in a actual Russian airliner which has been cut in half and turned into a diner. He added: “All I can say that people say about Bolton is it’s totally crap nowadays. Everyone says the same. If you look at the roads around the town hall, it’s pawn shops, betting shops, charity shops, it’s gone completely downhill. A lot of that stems from the fact the council closed the market.”

The second focused on De Havilland Way and was designed to increase capacity and improve connectivity in an area of significant congestion between the Beehive Roundabout and Junction Six of the motorway. But Bolton was not selected in the latest round of funding and leaders must decide whether to go through the process again.
