Maher has had coaching and managerial roles in his native Tipperary, Laois, Waterford, Dublin and Kilkenny.
It comes more than three years after Kilkenny’s Martin Fogarty stood down from a similar role as the National Hurling Development Manager. Fogarty recently quit the Hurling Development Committee in a scathing resignation letter, with one of his grievances being the delay in appointing someone to the role which Maher has now taken on.

Maher said: “It gives me great pride to be appointed to the role of National Head of Hurling. As with many people across Ireland and beyond, hurling has always played a hugely important role in my life.
