The Irish Mirror has established that a review of the current ministerial protection system is underway at Garda HQ

Garda bosses are considering plans to double the amount of armed detectives deployed to protect cabinet ministers, it has emerged.

But sources have now told us Garda bosses believe it is better for each cabinet member to have two SDU detectives with them – one to act as a full time driver, and the other to be a protection officer.

“Matters of security including those that pertain to the safety, security and welfare of public representatives remain under continuous review.” Garda Commissioner Drew Harris took the decision to give every minister an armed protection officer in September 2022 after he ordered a review. Then, towards the end of 2022, Mr Harris took the decision to allocate armed detectives for each minister because of the rise of protesters. Some 40 gardaí were recruited for the protection unit at a cost of some €2.5 million a year, including wages, expenses, allowances, and maintenance.
