Gardai believe the incident happened after a row broke out at the house and spilled out into the garden.
Gardai probing a fatal stabbing are appealing for witnesses to a row which broke out shortly before the attack.
A woman known to him was also injured in the attack and is believed to have sustained stab wounds to her hand. A senior investigating officer has been appointed in the murder probe and a garda liaison officer is in contact with Mr Hogan’s family.Gardai are appealing for any potential witnesses to contact them.
