He was born in San Bernardino, but, like so many American families, moved about a bit before settling in Danville, Illinois . He had ambitions to be an actor from an early age, but a great deal of life intervened before he found fame. He signed up with United States Marine Corps and served more than four years as a radio operator.
, he didn’t exactly seem of the age. That solid face could have occupied space in the background of a John Ford picture. But he was not entirely comfortable with being identified as the ideal “everyman”.
