Liverpool transfer news as Echo writers debate the future of Luis Diaz with uncertainty around the Colombian winger
Two and a half years on from his exciting arrival and Luis Diaz's Liverpool career is yet to spark. After coming in as the heir in waiting for Sadio Mane on the left, he has only left more questions than answers since.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are not really keen to sell Diaz anyway. Wingers under Arne Slot will have a key role to play as he plans to put his style across. There is certainly a battle in the frontline though with Cody Gakpo impressing at the Euros this summer, Mohamed Salah still having a backdrop of uncertainty, and Darwin Nunez a rogue element in it all.
Kieran King When I watched Luis Diaz in the flesh for Liverpool against Leicester in February 2022, I thought he had the potential to cement his place in the starting XI for years to come. He was that good. It was always going to be a challenge to replace Sadio Mane and the Reds have struggled to replicate the lethal combination of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Mane when they were in their pomp. But I still think it would be unfair to sell Diaz who has done very little wrong since joining.
Diaz, of course, offers more than mere goalscoring, with only Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold creating more chances for teammates per 90 than the winger. But that is why any replacement, which would be a must should the club sanction a sale, must be in the mould of the Egyptian, capable of creating and scoring at a high level to enhance and attack which somewhat stagnated last season despite still putting up impressive numbers.
Tom Cavilla If Liverpool are to sell anyone from the forward line this summer, Luis Diaz would be the exit that makes the most sense for Arne Slot.
