The government is meeting with NHS officials and union representatives at lunchtime today. They're expected to agree to give NHS staff in England their 5% pay increase.
The NHS Staff Council will hear reports and unions will decide whether to accept the offer after it balloted hundreds of thousands of health workers.
Members of the Royal College of Nursing union on the picket line outside Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham yesterday Unite, which is holding a series of local strikes this week, is the only major union other than nurses union the RCN to vote ‘no’. That means it will be harder to get a strike mandate – something dubbed an ‘all or nothing’ approach in one last attempt to get ministers to return to the negotiating table.
‘I think it’s disrespectful to the other trade unions. I think the RCN should have waited. They’re a member of the Staff Council. They were part of the negotiations.’
