The grandmother of four is in training for a gruelling 109-mile bike race that she hopes will inspire more older people to get active.
INSPIRING GRANDMA: Jo hopes her cycling challenge will encourage the older generation to get active
coach for mature athletes. With two grown-up children and four grandchildren from 10 months to eight years old, Jo is keen to show the physical feats grandparents can achieve.“A lot of people think you can’t take on physical feats the older you get, but I’m proof that that’s not true,” said Jo. “This upcoming event is certainly out of my comfort zone but that’s exactly why I’m determined to do it.
GET ACTIVE: Jo and her partner Ted have coached athletes in countries including Australia, Canada and Spain as he was concerned that she would injure herself. Instead, Jo started cycling too, which enabled her to participate in triathlons. Alongside her coaching, Jo competes for Great Britain in the 65 to 69 age category. She now hopes to break a world record by taking on the challenging Dartmoor Classic in Devon this July.She said: “My job as a coach has enabled me to travel to fantastic places I never thought I’d go, but I wanted to do the Dartmoor Classic as a personal challenge for myself. My mission for my clients is simple, helping people reach their next goal, however big or small that may be and now I’m challenging myself.
Every person she works with is different and the process demands patience, empathy and understanding. After this, she says it’s more a case of reassuring them of the things they can do, rather than focusing too much on the things they cannot.
