Guards shine in another setback: Takeaways from Rockets' loss to Nets

The Rockets did not want to concede anything, not to Kevin Durant coming off a 54-point, unstoppable night, not to Kyrie Irving taking his turn being spectacular now that he is permitted to play on his home floor and not to a Nets team with title aspirations.

“A lot of it was shots not falling,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “At times it was shot selection because they were switching, and we weren’t getting to the next action against their switching. But we definitely had some good looks, really good, like wide-open shots.” When Alperen Sengun grabbed the rebound of a missed shot, he took off the other way, then fired a pass ahead that Patty Mills nearly grabbed, only to have it skip off his left hand and to Green at the rim. Green’s slam with 31.8 seconds left gave him 30 points, the fifth-consecutive game he has scored at least 30, one shy of Allen Iverson for the longest streak of 30-point games for a rookie since the 1971-72 season, and the longest streak ever for a Rockets rookie.

That has been part of Green’s run through the second half of his rookie season, averaging 20.4 points on 39.9 percent 3-point shooting in his 30 games since Feb. 1. In the past five games, he has averaged 31.2 points, making 42.6 percent of his 3s.
