The price of a pint of Guinness is set to rise again, adding further pressure to already struggling pubs across Ireland. The six cent increase on Diageo products, including Guinness, Carlsberg, Rockshore and Hop House 13, is the fourth hike in two years. The Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI) slammed the price increase, warning it will force pubs to pass on the cost to customers, further impacting their viability.

The price of a pint of Guinness in pubs is set to rise beginning today, in what has been described as a blow to an industry already on its knees. The six cent increase on Diageo products, which begins on Monday, February 3, is the fourth hike set to take place in two years. The increase applies to all of the brew company’s draught products including Guinness , Carlsberg, Rockshore and Hop House 13.

The announcement was sent out by the company to publicans via a letter in recent weeks, with the price of a pint in some places set to creep up €6, and possibly more than €7 in Dublin. The price hike has been slammed by the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), who claimed the increase will result in customers being passed the hike, which in turn will further impact already struggling pubs and their dedicated customers. Pat Crotty, VFI CEO, said in a statement: “Publicans are being squeezed from every angle - rising energy costs, higher wages and government-imposed charges. This latest price increase from Diageo adds yet another layer of financial pressure on pubs already struggling to keep their doors open. “Our members understand that costs are rising across the board, but what they need now are meaningful supports to help absorb these increases. We need suppliers and the government to recognise the unique pressures facing publicans and work with us to find solutions that can sustain this vital sector.” Mr Crotty continued: “This isn’t just about the price of a pint. It’s about the survival of pubs across Ireland. The reality is that small, community-based pubs are at breaking point. Without additional support, particularly in rural areas, many will simply not survive.” Join the Irish Mirror’s breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive breaking news and the latest headlines direct to your phone.
