Storm Herminia is approaching Ireland and Northern Ireland, prompting multiple weather warnings. Met Éireann issued wind and rain warnings for various counties in the Republic of Ireland, while the UK Met Office issued a snow and ice warning for Northern Ireland. The warnings come after the devastation caused by Storm Eowyn and advise of potential strong winds, heavy rainfall, snow showers, and icy patches, leading to dangerous travel conditions.
Multiple weather warnings have been issued to over half the counties in Ireland and Northern Ireland as Storm Herminia approaches the island in the coming days. In the Republic of Ireland, Met Éireann has issued two Status Yellow wind warnings that will apply to affected counties starting at 6am on Sunday morning and remaining in place until 6am on Monday morning.
The first warning applies to Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and all five counties in Munster. It will come into effect at 6am on Sunday morning and remain in place until 6pm on Sunday evening, with Met Éireann flagging “strong and gusty winds” which will damage structures and trees already weakened by Storm Eowyn and lead to dangerous travelling conditions. The second warning applies separately to Cork, Kerry and Waterford from 11pm on Sunday night to 6am on Monday morning, with all the aforementioned potential impacts also applying in this case. A Status Yellow rain warning, meanwhile, has also been issued to Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford. It will come into effect at 5am on Sunday morning and remain in place until 5pm on Sunday evening, with heavy downpours of rain possibly leading to spot flooding in the worst affected areas. In Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office has issued a Status Yellow snow and ice warning to Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone, which will come into place at 5pm on Saturday until 10am on Sunday morning. The public has been warned of snow showers and icy patches which will lead to difficult travelling conditions during the time the alert is in place. All of these alerts come after Storm Herminia was named by the Spanish Met Office on Friday while Ireland was still reeling from the devastation caused by Storm Eowyn. Leading Irish weather expert Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has forecast that the worst of the storm will remain offshore between now and Monday, but the warnings already issued are a sign of the significant impact to be expected. Beyond Monday, the Met Éireann forecast is for “unsettled” weather with “frequent spells of rain or showers” into the middle of next week, with conditions feeling “breezy” and “rather windy”.
