Heimir Hallgrimsson has told Glenn Whelan he is entitled to his opinion - but the Ireland boss doesn’t agree with it.
Whelan’s stinging barbs came just days after he had scouted Greece’s 3-0 win over Finland for Hallgrimsson, while Ireland faced England. Whelan was speaking as a TV pundit for Virgin Media and said at the time: “There’s not a positive thing in this Ireland team at the moment."I don't want to hear about performances. I don't want to hear about shape and how we are playing. I want to get back to winning games and being involved in tournaments.Whelan also called for a shake-up in personnel and said: “There are too many players playing for Ireland who are too used to losing games. Something needs to change.
Yesterday, Hallgrimsson dropped Matt Doherty, Callum Robinson, Alan Browne and Jake O’Brien for the upcoming games against Finland and Greece. “We have a pretty young squad so now is the time to step up and be a leader. Stake your claim and own your position.”
