Another price increase for popular beer brands, including Heineken, is set to hit Irish pubs later this month, adding to the financial strain already felt by the industry. The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) warns that ongoing price hikes could force many pubs to close.

The price of a pint of Heineken and related draught products is set to increase by at least six cent later this month. This follows a similar hike by Diageo , which came into effect last Monday, pushing up the price of Guinness, as well as other brands such as Carlsberg, Rockshore, and Hop House 13. It’s likely to result in a 10 cent increase for customers at the till.

The move has been criticised by the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), which suggested breweries could end up pricing themselves out of the market. “You would hope that the brewer would be very aware of the personal circumstances of your average customer when they’re looking at taking price increases,” said VFI CEO Pat Crotty. “There are publicans who are at €5 for a pint and there are publicans who are just under €6 for the likes of lagers, and when you start tipping over to the next euro, people start turning the note over in their hand before they’ll part with it,” he told Highland Radio. Heineken brands that will be affected by the latest price increase include Beamish, Birra Moretti, Orchard Thieves cider, and Beamish, as well as its non-alcoholic brand, Heineken 0.0. The price hike will come into effect during the last week of February.Earlier this week, Diageo introduced a six-cent increase on all of its draught products, as well as a nine-cent increase in the price of a pint of Guinness 0.0. It was the company’s fourth price hike in two years, adding almost a euro to the cost of a pint since January 2023. The VFI warned following the announcement of the move that small pubs were at breaking point and many would not survive being “squeezed” from all angles. “Any increase is either going to be absorbed or passed on,” said Mr Crotty. “If it’s absorbed, it damages margin, it damages sustainability it damages the capacity of that business to survive. “There are a lot of customers out there who are feeling the pinch and who may decide if the price goes up again they're going to drink less or less often.
