'He gets it, he understands the Trust.' Watford's Community Director explains why the new chair of trustees of WFCTrust is a big asset to the organisation watfordfc
From starting out as a coach to heading up the governing board, a big part of Simon Macqueen’s life has gone full circle as he plays a vital role in ensuring Watford’s Community Sports & Education Trust remains in healthy shape for the future.
While the first new appointments could be made within the next few weeks, this is one element of the continued development of an organisation that celebrated its 30th birthday this year and has changed considerably both in scale and function since it was borne out of Graham Taylor’s vision and pioneering work that Watford should be at the heartbeat of its community.
“Dropping out of the Premier League and not going up this year does have an impact. Eventually some of the support and the funds we get will diminish and trying to make sure we are on a sound footing – and we are in a good financial place at the moment – and maintaining that is going to be a key priority.
Simon’s strategic experience will be invaluable in shaping the future direction of the Trust, but a different approach is being taken this time round. “That five-year strategy gives us the framework to operate in,” Simon added. “The year-on-year things we do may change and adapt accordingly but it comes under an over-arching framework that we feel confident that if we’ve tested it with external partners, and not just people in the business, we’re going to get what the people of Watford and surrounding areas are asking for and wanting.
