How a sleep consultant fixed my toddler's routine - and gave me my life back ✒️ graceholliday via ipaperviews

You know that movie trope where a parent leaves their crying child’s bedroom and leans their head back against the closed door? It’s a pretty lazy way of signalling to the audience that they’re exhausted, but oh how I connected with it once IBack in 2021, we had what is known in certain circles as “a good baby”. She was rarely fussy, never sick, she didn’t cry much, or for long when she did.

I learned pretty quickly, however, that you don’t, under any circumstances, tell other parents that you have a good baby, especially those with kids around the same age. Comparison is unavoidable and I didn’t want to make anyone feel bad. We knew parents whose baby cried a little less than it breathed, another whose baby woke every 60 minutes through the night for months. We knew that we were lucky, but we also wondered if we’d maybe earned a break.

. I came to believe that the universe simply balances itself out over time. Those parents with hard-work babies would one day have affable, affectionate teens. We, in turn, will be dealt a fire-breathing monster. As our baby reached toddlerhood, we laid our yellow brick road for making our good baby a good sleeper. We feared crutches – things a– the way the Cowardly Lion fears, well, everyone. We ditched the dummy at four months, moved her into her own room at six months, made a solid, bedtime-signalling routine that we stuck too. Except for one tiny thing. We couldn’t fix the fact that our baby wanted to fall asleep in the arms of one of her two favourite people in the world.
