We’re always told that wine never goes bad as it only gets better with age. However, that’s not always the case as bottles of wine, both opened and unopened, have a shelf life . With Christmas and New Year’s rolling around, households across the country will be up to their ears with bottles of wine - from white and red to sparkling and dessert wines.
It’s recommended that wine be stored in a cool, dark space so the first thing to do is make sure you have got it away from the windows or appliances that can get warm. You should also place them on their sides as it will help to prevent the cork from overdrying. The lasting time of a wine also depends on what type you have. White wine often outlives its drinking window by one to two years, according to JJ Buckley Wines. They explained that the same can be said for red wine, by two or three years, and even cooking wines, by three to five years. However, some of the most long lasting wines are fine wines, which typically can still be drunk for decades. These are the ones that are known for getting better with age. All this changes when you actually open a bottle of wine as the liquid inside is exposed to bacteria, light, heat, oxygen etc… All of these factors impact your wine, but you can store the bottle in a cooler temperature in order to try and slow this reaction down.
