My driver, Juan Hooker, who picked me up every day, took great care of me. I knew I wanted to hear certain gospel songs. So he played Mahalia Jackson every time I got in the car. We learned the entire Mahalia Jackson catalog together. Mahalia got me through it. He’d have her on in the morning, and it was like we were going to serve. He’d drive me when I was in costume during filming, and it was like we were going to serve.
