'My gut sense is that it's a very large review, very large indeed'
More than 400 families have so far contacted a review into failings at Nottingham hospitals' maternity departments. Donna Ockenden, who is chairing the inquiry, said she believed the review into Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital would be "very large".
"But because of data protection, we can't just scoop it up and take it away. It's about getting across to the families that we won't forget them, they are very much included but we need to go through a process."Ms Ockenden, who led a similar inquiry that uncovered failings leading to 201 baby deaths in Shrewsbury, said 25 current or former staff had also been in touch.
A team of 85 working health professionals will look at cases as far back as 2012, as well as 'exceptional' cases dating back to 2006. "We're asking the trust to go back to 2012 but if someone comes forward and says 'I was in one of those categories' and it happened in 2008 - those are the kind of cases we will include," Ms Ockenden explained.
"Nottingham looks after 10,000 women a year so already, going back 10 years - we've got a pool of potentially 100,000 families. But generally, families can be assured if they were part of the old review they can be with us, and if they have a case within those categories they can come forward."
