Former Ireland and Chelsea star Damien Duff last month signed a two-and-a-half-year contract extension with Shelbourne.

Damien Duff says he was so eager to sign his contract extension at Shelbourne that he didn’t even read it!

Duff said previously that he was drunk while on holiday in Lisbon when he signed his previous contract. “Why did I sign it? Just because I’m happy. I have no plan to leave Ireland anytime soon. Shelbourne has been a massive part of my life, as have Joey, the staff and the players. First to go was Paddy Barrett in the 79th minute. He picked up two yellows. As did Tyreke Wilson two minutes later. Wilson’s second yellow was for handball inside the box, for a penalty that was cooly dispatched by new Drogheda signing Douglas James-Taylor.

“Is it a penalty? Absolutely, it’s a blatant penalty. But I don’t think anyone in the history of football outside of Luis Suarez has ever intentionally handled the ball, and if you intentionally handle the ball it’s a yellow. “Credit to the club upstairs and Lukey and Stephen, getting the business done quickly early in July, getting Harry, Ali and Sam in. They are three big players. It’s an absolutely strong bench and it’s probably the strongest squad we’ve had in, here we go again, 20 years.”
