Ainara Pedroso, who lives in Cork, opened up about learning she was HIV positive, which led her to fearing she wouldn't find an accepting partner - but she met her husband just a few months later
A Cork woman has opened up about how a health diagnosis that initially shocked her actually led to finding her soulmate.
Since she had gotten a rapid test in a sexual health centre, she didn't have to wait long for the results, but it did mean by the time she found out, her GP was closed. She immediately called her best friend, who was very supportive. "She said 'look, your GP is closed now, so why don't we go out for a few pints instead'," she recalls.
While there were some nasty responses, Ainara took comfort in the fact that many people were supportive. One day, she came across a man with piercing blue eyes - her future husband Peter Thijs. "Nowadays, having HIV is no different to managing other chronic health conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Once you are on effective treatment, you can't pass it onto your partner."
