Two traveller families involved in a violent incident at a SuperValu store in Cork are set to engage in a mediation service after a judge suggested the need for resolution. CCTV footage captured the altercation, showing men wielding weapons and a chaotic scene inside the supermarket.

Members of two traveller families involved in a violent altercation at a Cork supermarket are set to participate in a mediation service later this week. The incident occurred at a SuperValu branch in Hollyhill shopping centre on January 6th, where customers witnessed men wielding baseball bats and pickaxe handles. Det. Garda Aidan Forrest, providing evidence in Cork District Court last Friday, described how several vehicles entered the supermarket car park.

Among the occupants were individuals carrying weapons, including Charles Faulkner, captured on CCTV exiting a silver Toyota Avensis, and Jamie O’Brien, who emerged from a Ford Tipper Truck brandishing a baseball bat. The CCTV footage showed Faulkner chasing O’Brien around the car park before pursuing him into the SuperValu store. An altercation ensued down an aisle, culminating in Faulkner swinging a pickaxe handle at O’Brien, who sought refuge behind the checkout counter. Faulkner then fled the scene in a black Passat.Judge Mary Dorgan granted bail to Michael Faulkner, aged 20, and Michael John O’Brien, aged 22, on separate charges. Jamie O’Brien, aged 33, was remanded in custody. Charles Faulkner, aged 18, and Michael James Faulkner, aged 26, were also remanded in custody. Solicitor Frank Buttimer, representing both Faulkners, informed the court of his efforts to facilitate mediation between the families. While Pavee Point, a traveller advocacy group, had initially suggested mediation, they cited a lack of funding and directed Buttimer to the Traveller Mediation Service. Both families expressed willingness to explore conflict resolution options, and mediation is scheduled for Thursday, facilitated by a member of the Traveller Mediation Service.
