A large-scale international sleep study reveals that Irish adults are among the worst sleepers globally, experiencing significant sleep deprivation.

One of the largest international sleep studies ever conducted reveals a stark truth about Irish sleep habits: the Emerald Isle ranks among the worst sleepers globally. Analyzing data from 55,000 participants across 57 nations, the study exposed serious sleep deprivation trends within Ireland 's adult population. Thousands of Irish adults are losing as much as 90 minutes of sleep each night, leading to a staggering 49% reporting they wake up tired.

The study's findings shed light on global sleep patterns, highlighting Ireland's place among the most sleep-deprived nations. Ireland occupies a top five position globally for waking up tired, sharing this unfortunate distinction with Norway, Sweden, the USA, and Australia. A spokesperson for the study revealed that Ireland also stands among the worst for experiencing fragmented sleep, with almost a third (27%) of participants waking up more than twice during the night. This places Ireland in the top five globally for sleep disruptions. The average Irish adult gets only six hours and 35 minutes of sleep per night, considerably less than the desired eight hours. The study delved into the reasons behind this sleep deficit, uncovering a worrying trend: 43% of Irish adults express concerns about insufficient sleep, and a significant 75% admit to using their phones in the bedroom, potentially disrupting their sleep. Alarmingly, 19% of Irish respondents regularly rely on sleep medication. The study was conducted to gather data for the latest IKEA Sleep Index, with the resulting 'IKEA Sleep Uncovered' report aiming to illuminate the obstacles to achieving quality sleep and propose solutions for a better night's rest. The spokesperson emphasized that the study unveiled significant sleep inequalities within vulnerable groups in Ireland, including those facing financial insecurity, disabilities, LGBTQ+ identities, and the demands of motherhood. These groups mirror trends observed in other struggling nations such as Norway, the USA, and the UK. However, the report also offers hope by exploring solutions to improve sleep, ranging from consistent routines and relaxing activities to optimizing the bedroom environment
