While a Beast from the East-style event is unlikely, cold weather in the US could trigger powerful storms in the Atlantic, potentially heading towards Ireland. A leading weather expert has warned that Ireland could soon be hit by 'some nasty storms' as temperatures are predicted to plummet over the coming days. The country has been enjoying unseasonably warm weather this week, with average daytime temperatures remaining in the low teens amid largely dry and settled conditions. Reports emerged recently claiming that a Beast from the East-like storm could be tracking towards Ireland , bringing with it snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.
While the latest weather forecasts suggest that Ireland is set to avoid another Beast from the East, Alan O'Reilly, the hobbyist meteorologist behind the popular Carlow Weather social media pages, has warned that some seriously cold weather is set to push down over the US next week which could then 'fire up the jet stream' and possibly bring some powerful storms our way. In a weather update issued on Thursday evening, O'Reilly said: 'If you are heading to the East of the USA next week it will be very cold and that deep cold will then fire up the Jet Stream later next week which could develop some nasty storms in the Atlantic that *COULD* head our way. Very uncertain yet but one to keep an eye on.' Meanwhile, according to Met Éireann's forecast, we can expect mostly dry conditions this weekend apart from isolated showers, mostly in the west. A cloudy start is expected on Friday morning with some patchy rain over Connacht and Ulster for a time, but it is expected to stay dry elsewhere. It will remain rather cloudy through to the afternoon with highest temperatures of 8C to 11C with southerly breezes. Generally dry conditions are forecast for this evening but it will be cloudy with some patchy mist or drizzle along southern counties, with lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees with southerly breezes. Saturday is expected to be cloudy overall but mostly dry too with southerly breezes. Some patchy light rain will drift in over southern counties later in the afternoon, with highest temperatures of 9C to 12C. A mix of cloud and clear spells are forecast for Saturday evening with outbreaks of rain slowly moving in from the west over much of Munster, Connacht and west Ulster. It will be drier and clearer further east though with a few spots of drizzle, with lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C generally with mostly moderate southerly winds. According to Met Éireann's latest forecast, there are fears it will turn slightly more unsettled on Sunday with a band of rain moving in across western counties together with strengthening southerly winds. It will be cloudy elsewhere but eastern counties should stay dry until the afternoon, with highest temperatures of 9C to 12C. The last of the rain will clear the east early on Sunday night with clear spells and some showers following and lowest temperatures of 4C to 8C in light to moderate southwest winds.
