Former Newcastle, Aston Villa and Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has weighed in with his thoughts on the long search to find Stephen Kenny’s replacement.

The former goalkeeper, who retired with 134 senior appearances, expressed his surprise at the fact that, almost six months after Stephen Kenny ’s departure, a new man had not been put in place.

At O’Shea’s unveiling, FAI Director of Football Marc Canham said that the identity of the new boss would be revealed in early April, with “contractual obligations” preventing him from releasing the name at that stage. The process has left Given - who played under Mick McCarthy, Brian Kerr, Steve Staunton, Giovanni Trapattoni and Martin O’Neill - as baffled as everyone else.

“The March games didn't go to plan, in terms of getting wins, but the training and the set-up, the stuff behind the scenes that we don't want to see on matchday with John and the staff was very smooth.
