Despite controversial comments by US President Donald Trump regarding Gaza, Ireland maintains its readiness to accept an invitation for Taoiseach Micheál Martin to meet President Trump on St. Patrick's Day. Social Democrats have called for the Taoiseach to reconsider the trip if Trump's rhetoric continues, but the Taoiseach's office insists the annual meeting is important for the long-standing relationship between the US and Ireland.
There is “no suggestion that Ireland wouldn’t take up an invitation” for Taoiseach Micheál Martin to meet US President Donald Trump on St Patrick’s Day.
On Tuesday evening, he suggested that the US would take over the Gaza Strip and make it into the “Riviera” of the Middle East. He also suggested that Palestinian people could move to Jordan or Egypt. The comments were met with anger by Irish opposition politicians. She said: “If Trump remains on this trajectory, towards a policy of ethnic cleansing, then no, we cannot support the Taoiseach going to the US. I don't think the people of Ireland would support it either. So if that is the trajectory on which he remains, absolutely not.”
He said: “There is much that we agree on as well as disagree on. I don’t think there is any suggestion that Ireland wouldn’t take up any invitation.”
