Richard Boyd Barrett Says Ireland Should Not 'Bend the Knee' to Donald Trump on St Patrick's Day
DONALD TRUMPIRELANDPOLITICS

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett criticized Ireland's plan to send a large delegation of ministers to the United States for St Patrick's Day, arguing that Taoiseach Micheal Martin should not meet President Donald Trump. Boyd Barrett believes that 'lovebombing' Trump will not be effective and called for Ireland to 'stand up' to him, citing Trump's potential economic policies and threats against other countries.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett said Ireland should not "bend the knee" to "bully" US President Donald Trump this St Patrick’s Day. He told the Irish Sunday Mirror he does not have an issue with ministers travelling to Washington next month to meet the cultural and business leaders of Irish America.

It follows news this week that the Government will send a higher number of ministers than usual to the United States as part of a charm offensive this St Patrick’s Day. Mr Trump has suggested he will implement several policy changes that could negatively impact Ireland’s economy. This includes lowering the corporation tax rate to woo businesses back to the States, as well as introducing new tariffs on foreign goods. Mr Boyd-Barrett said Ireland and Irish ministers "lovebombing" President Trump is unlikely to win us any favour.Mr Boyd Barrett added: "I don’t think lovebombing Trump is going to make any difference. "He is on a wrecking mission as far as I’m concerned. The idea that lovebombing him is going to make a difference is a fool’s errand. I’m not against ministers being sent to meet community or industry contacts or developing cultural links. All those are reasonable things to do. "I don’t think the Irish Government should be bending the knee to him. Given the sort of things Trump is threatening and some of the policies he is pursuing, I don’t see why you would be handing him bowls of shamrock or co-celebrating Ireland’s national day with a President who seems to be just making threats against everybody. "I don’t really think that is a good move. I wouldn’t be in favour of us taking up such an invitation. "It is a slightly separate matter than sending ministers or government representatives to meet contacts in other parts of the United States. "But I think the idea that fawning in front of Trump is going to make any difference would be foolish in the extreme."We need to stand up against his agenda, in my opinion. Whether it is on the economic front or the statements he is making about Palestine or the threat that if we impose sanctions on Israel we may suffer consequences.Join the Irish Mirror’s breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive breaking news and the latest headlines direct to your phone.
