The Health Service Executive has detected the country’s first ever case of Clade I mpox – the more deadly strain of the viral disease previously known as monkeypox.
There was an outbreak of Clade II mpox in Ireland in 2022, with 229 confirmed cases recorded in the 12 months after it became a notifiable disease on May 27 of that year. The HSE said the detection of Clade I mpox in Ireland was “not unexpected”, as small numbers of cases have been recorded in Europe and other countries outside of Africa.
“As part of our public health work we are also investigating how the individual acquired the infection,” he added. Common symptoms include a skin rash or pus-filled lesions, which can last for between two and four weeks. It can also cause fever, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.
