Sophie was the most popular name for baby girls in Ireland in 2024, while Jack held onto its long-standing position as the favourite name for baby boys.
For the boys, Jack remained unchallenged, marking its eighth consecutive year as the most popular boy's name in Ireland. Interestingly, 2016 was the only year since 2007 when Jack didn't clinch the top spot, losing out to James that year.The CSO report also highlighted some significant shifts in popularity. Caleb made a remarkable leap up the boys' names chart, moving from 142nd place in 2023 to 91st in 2024, reports the Irish Mirror.
In 2024, there were 9,582 unique names registered for newborns. As expected, Murphy was the most common surname for babies born that year, followed by Kelly, Byrne, O'Brien, and Walsh.
