NASA warns that the risk of a collision with the 100-meter asteroid 2024 YR4 has risen to 3.1%. This 'country killer' could devastate Ireland with earthquakes or tsunamis if it impacts Earth in 2032. Experts are tracking its trajectory, but the James Webb Space Telescope's monitoring capabilities are limited, raising concerns about predicting the impact with enough accuracy.
The chances of a giant asteroid that is the size of 59 Bonos obliterating a chunk of Earth have increased again, warned NASA .
READ MORE: Giant asteroid could wipe out Ireland with a series of devastating earthquakes or massive tsunamis But, worryingly, NASA has announced that the James Webb Space Telescope can only monitor it until the end of March – because it could disappear from view in April. Astronomers fear they may not get enough data in that time to further calculate the chance of a devastating impact before it is observable again in 2028, which would be just four years before its current impact date of December 22, 2032.
If the asteroid were to strike these cities, it is estimated that over 100 million people would be impacted, causing a large loss of life and the destruction of buildings and land. Retired astronaut and former International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield, whose daughter has lived in Dublin, warned of the dangers.
