An asteroid the size of 59 Bono's is racing towards Earth and would 'devastate' Ireland if it hit. Global defence plans have been triggered to prevent a catastrophic impact in 2032.

A giant asteroid, the size of 59 Bonos, is hurtling towards Earth and could wipe Ireland out with a series of catastrophic earthquakes or massive tsunamis, an expert has warned.

Astronomy Ireland's David Moore has raised alarm bells, saying this asteroid would be a “country killer” if it hits Earth. With a potential collision date in 2032 - eight years away - the asteroid has now triggered a global defence plan, with US and European space agencies ranking it among the top threats to human existence.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror earlier this week, space science expert Mr Moore explained: "It is a real danger. Every time one of these comes close, it is a reminder that there could be an asteroid impact that would cause a significant natural disaster. An object that is 100 metres in size is very significant. It has a 1.3% chance of hitting the Earth in 2032, which is pretty small odds.

He went on to describe the potential destruction, saying that if YR4 were to strike Ireland, "the total country is gone." He stated: "There would be a crater, the middle of Ireland would be devastated by earthquakes, or if it hit the sea, there would be tsunamis like we’ve never seen before, probably kilometres high. For comparison, the magnitude-9 earthquake that caused the St. Stephen’s Day tsunamis in 2004 would be trivial if a 100-metre object hits the sea.
