NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (Cneos) has detected an asteroid on a trajectory towards Earth, with a potential impact in 2032. There is a 2.3% chance that this asteroid, 2024 YR4, could collide with Earth, posing a significant threat to Dublin. While the probability remains low, the impact could generate a massive tsunami if the asteroid is as large as 100 meters in diameter.
Nasa’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies has located an asteroid hurtling in our direction and believes it could make landfall in 2032.There is currently a 2.3% chance that an asteroid strong enough to wipe out Dublin will hit the earth, Astronomy Ireland has warned.
“But, if it lands in the Atlantic Ocean, there could be a massive tsunami if this thing is as big as 100 metres across.” “That’s one of the problems; we won’t be able to follow it even with the biggest telescopes in the world for more than a few weeks.
