Felix Jones is only 36 but could win his second World Cup with South Africa on Saturday night
Ireland's involvement in Saturday's World Cup final comes down to a Dubliner who played for Leinster and Munster - and for Ireland.
His chance with the world champions came as a result of the work he put in after moving from the dressing-room into the coaches' box when Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber ruled briefly at Munster before answering their country's call in late 2018.“Hard question," said Jones, when asked to sum up an amazing five year stint with the Springboks.“I have a lot of gratitude to not only the management but the players as well and the people behind the scenes.
“Everything gets discussed, then everyone makes a plan and we align on that. If we agree, then great. If someone disagrees and has a better plan, then we go with that. So it’s always enjoyable.”He spent just a year with Leinster, earning one cap, before making the move south and the back three specialist made 90 appearances with the Reds over six years, despite his injury problems."Yeah, Doug was my first room mate when I first joined Munster as a young full-back/winger," said Jones.
"I think all of us as Springboks are better players because of him, because he looks so much into the small details.
