Met Eireann has issued an update to its forecast for Christmas week. While widespread snow remains unlikely at this stage, weather models hint at possible wintry showers before Christmas and a sharp temperature drop after the festivities.
Met Eireann has issued a major update to its long-range forecast as hopes of a White Christmas grow. With just 13 days to go, weather maps - which are notoriously subject to change - tentatively show a huge wall of snow approaching Ireland towards December 22 and 23.
Issuing a new forecast for the week of December 23 to December 29 earlier this week, it said that a high-pressure system is set to dominate the weather pattern during Christmas week, bringing slightly warmer-than-average temperatures to most of the country. However, this same high pressure will also create a perfect setup for cold, frosty nights and a lingering layer of mist and fog during the day.
Met Eireann said: "A reasonably robust signal emerges for Christmas week with high pressure likely to be centred just to the southwest of Ireland. Temperatures are predicted to be slightly above normal overall although, with high pressure, there is a possibility of colder/frostier nights and lingering mist and fog during the days. Anticyclonic gloom – generally cloudy conditions – might also be a feature though.
Despite this, long-range weather models show a risk of the country being blanketed in snow in the run-up to Christmas. They also signal a major temperature drop after Christmas, with the mercury plummeting a low as -5 on December 27. "Largely cloudy at first Friday night with light rain or drizzle in the northwest, slowly sinking southeastwards while becoming patchier. Becoming clearer from the north and west towards morning with a few showers near Atlantic coasts. Some patches of frost or fog are possible. Lowest temperatures of -1Cto 3C with light to moderate west to northwesterly winds developing.
