A new survey has shed light on Irish people's attitudes and responses to the presence of spiders in their homes. It comes households are being warned to watch out for false widow spiders.
Spiders usually start to come out in early September, with their presence noticeable in homes until around mid-October.
Worryingly, the study revealed that the majority of people in Ireland say that they can’t distinguish harmless spiders from venomous ones, such as the false widow spider. In the study, a whopping 98% of respondents reported the presence of spiders in their homes this autumn, with 36% believing there is an increase in the spider population, compared to previous years. Nearly half, at 47%, noted that spiders now appear considerably larger than in the past.
Research carried out by the University of Galway has highlighted similarities between the venom of a noble false widow and a black widow spider and concluded that bites from a false widow can have a "severe impact on human health".
