Cooney, hailing from Clarinbridge, suffered a devastating ninth-round stoppage at Belfast 's Ulster Hall while defending his Celtic super-featherweight title against Nathan Howells.
The 28-year-old boxer was attended to by medical professionals at the ringside before being carried out on a stretcher and transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Belfast. Upon arrival at the RVH, it was discovered that Cooney had experienced an intracranial hemorrhage, leading to immediate surgery to alleviate the pressure on his brain. He remains in a critical condition within the hospital's intensive care unit.Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Clones boxer McGuigan, who achieved World Featherweight Champion status in 1985, conveyed his shock upon learning of Cooney's devastating injury while extending heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery. 'I was devastated to hear about this young man’s injury,' he stated. 'Unfortunately, from time to time professional boxing presents these types of tragedies. 'My heart goes out to young John Cooney and his family and I pray that the next crucial few days brings him closer to recovery.' A multitude of prominent figures from the Irish sporting arena have extended their support to Cooney following Saturday's bout. Olympic boxing hero Michael Carruth shared a heartfelt message to the injured fighter, stating, 'It's horrible to hear. He's in my prayers and I'm hoping that he makes a full recovery.' Carruth, who gained national recognition for his gold medal victory at the 1992 Olympic boxing final in Barcelona, remarked, 'It's not common to hear of a boxer suffer a brain haemorrhage during a fight so it's shocking and I just hope that he makes a full recovery. McGregor has further demonstrated his support by donating £20,000 (€23,925) to a fundraising campaign established on behalf of Cooney's family to aid in his recovery.
