Monaghan man Shane McGuirk cruised to a sensational victory in the Lakeside WDF World Darts Championship on Sunday. McGuirk beat Singaporean darts legend Paul Lim 6-3 in the final to lift the trophy and capture the £50,000 first prize.
The 29-year-old only dropped three sets in the entire tournament - all in the final - as he stormed to the biggest title of his career. His opponent Lim was one of the stories of the championship as the 70-year-old, who in 1990 became the first player to hit a perfect nine-dart finish during the Embassy World Darts Championship, rolled back the years at Lakeside. But Lim had no answer to McGuirk's superior scoring power, and the result was never in doubt from an early stage. McGuirk, who has come close to landing a PDC Tour card and won the 2013 Irish Open, was elated to win at a venue where the likes of Phil Taylor, Eric Bristow and Raymond van Barneveld have triumphed in the past. After sealing victory with a double 20, the Castleblayney man said: "I don't know what happened. I am absolutely speechless."He put more under pressure. He switched to 19s, and he just couldn't stop hitting them.
