New legislation in Ireland requires drivers to provide their driver numbers and those of any named drivers on their policy when taking out motor insurance. These details will be shared with the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID), allowing Gardaí to verify driver's licenses and insurance details, strengthening efforts to identify uninsured drivers.
Irish drivers have been warned that their licences could be revoked under strict new laws set to come into effect later this year.
The new measure, which comes into effect on March 31, means that motorists looking to renew their policies will not be able to do so unless these numbers are provided. The new rules were approved by then-Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan in November in a bid to help keep uninsured drivers off the road.Assistant Commissioner for roads policing and community engagement Paula Hilman has hailed the new legislation as a significant tool to "further strengthen" Gardaí's efforts to enforce the law on Irish roads.
"This new development underscores the considerable progress that is being achieved when we improve the technology available to members of An Garda Siochana, when we work in partnership with stakeholders and share data."
