'Basically we are in no man’s land'

But weeks later the council wrote and told them their application was now "ineligible" as their income "exceeds the threshold". Charlene, 36, told us: "It’s been horrible, our lives are destroyed. It’s like somebody has died. We are living on top of each other, I hate it." Denis said he suffered a heart attack in 2021 and was put on the council’s medical priority list, but the couple were offered a bedsit which they "had to refuse on medical grounds".
