September is a beautiful time of year and while the days are growing shorter, outside the garden is thriving. Whether you're an avid gardener or just starting out, here are some tips on how to make the most of your garden this September from the expert himself, The Irish Gardener Peter Dowdall.September is one of the busiest months of the year for gardeners as it is the starting point to set your garden up for the next year ahead.
Pick up Daffodils, Tulips, Alliums, Hyacinths, Bluebells, Muscari and Crocus blubs - there’s also a fabulous bulb called the Sicilian Honey Garlic, which is great for bees. Purchase them when you see them for sale, but if it's still very warm, then hold off into October. Wait to plant your Tulips until later in the year.
There’s a study from the University of Cambridge that found plants are flowering about a month earlier than usual. It might mean very little to you or me but it’s actually hugely important ecologically. It means that insects, which have a symbiotic relationship with plants, adapted over millennia, come out of hibernation too late. If the insects have got no food source it has a knock on effect.
