Samantha Vaughan told Star Chic how after getting Covid in late 2022, she was getting “ear, nose and throat infections constantly” and “had a bit of breathlessness with it”

An Irish mum who was diagnosed with lung cancer has told how she hopes to encourage people to “trust their gut” if they feel something is wrong — as she opened up about her own diagnosis.

“I wanted to go further and go to an Ear Nose and Throat, or ENT, to see if there’s something else that I can get done to get rid of all these ongoing infections in my sinuses and also this breathlessness I had, which was common with Covid.” “She went off and she checked it and said, did I not hear anything from the hospital? I said, ‘no, I didn’t’ — and she told me they were supposed to get back to me to have a CT scan, and that a lesion showed up on my right lung.

“Around the June 15, I went to Kilkenny Hospital for a CT scan. I had a contrast CT scan around 8am that morning and around 4pm, I got a phone call from my doctor to say that there was a tumour on my right lung. She said, “I went to them for a meeting and was basically told the only thing that they could do was to go in and take out half of my right lung. That’s the only way that they could do the biopsy to find out exactly what it was.

“They asked if I’d go for further lab testing on this, and I said, ‘yeah, no problem’. The further testing came out with that I had the EGFR — it’s a protein in your lungs, not genetic or anything like that. It’s just the way that the cells divide.Samantha praised the “great team of nurses” at CUH — and told how she spent around two weeks in the hospital, including a few days in the ICU.

This year, people can fundraise as individuals, at school or at work. They can take part in the fund-raising efforts through a number of different ways, including holding a fundraiser, joining community collections around the country or taking part in a steps challenge.
