Irish people are averaging six hours 35 minutes a night but yearn for a full eight hours
One of the largest international sleep studies ever conducted shows that Irish people are amongst the worst sleepers on the planet.
They said that their new report gives new insights into global sleep habits – including key statistics like people in Ireland being some of the most tired in the world when waking up. Ireland is in the top five globally for waking up tired, alongside Norway, Sweden, the USA and Australia. He added: “Some 43 per cent of people in Ireland are worried they are not getting enough sleep and 75 per cent of people in Ireland said they use their phone in the bedroom, potentially contributing to sleep disruption. Nearly one in five of people in Ireland regularly use sleep medication.”
"But there's hope. The report also explores solutions to better sleep, from consistent routines and relaxing activities to optimising the bedroom environment.” The study spokesperson said: “While most individuals sleep for six hours and 40 minutes, they aspire to reach nearly eight hours. It’s little surprise, given the report finds that 70 per cent of people view sleep as one of life’s greatest joys. Over half even prefer staying in and sleeping to going out and socialising.
He added: “Screens are deeply ingrained in bedtime routines, despite fears over their impact on sleep quality. Three quarters of people use their phones in the bedroom, soaring to 86 per cent among 18 to 24-year-olds, the group most likely to worry about the amount of sleep they get. Laptops, tablets, and TVs are also bedtime staples, with 24 per cent using laptops in bed and 39 per cent watching TV before sleep.
