Dr Siun Murphy is seeing a growing stream of patients looking to reverse operations or revise injectables

One of the country’s top plastic surgeons has warned about the rise in the number of botched cosmetic procedures in Ireland. She said cases of botched surgery can end up at A&E with people arriving with septic wounds from procedures done abroad.

While Botox has to be administered by a doctor, dermal filler products are classified as medical devices in Europe, which means they can be injected into the face by practitioners without a medical degree.horrifying as that is. It is very serious. It is not a regulated industry. The consultant, who features on Dr Eva Orsmond’’s RTE documentary How To Live Better For Longer, below, told how she has been treating a patient who unknowingly had permanent filler injected all over her face in Spain. She added: “She didn’t realise the repercussions, that she would have lumps and bumps everywhere causing her pain inside her mouth, on her forehead and on her temple.

Dr Murphy, who works at Blackrock Clinic, said facelifts are falling in popularity in favour of non-surgical procedures.
