Taoiseach Micheál Martin to discuss Ukraine war, Middle East situation, and global food security at the Munich Security Conference.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin will participate in the Munich Security Conference , a premier global forum for international security policy, to engage with leaders and experts from across Europe, the Middle East , and North America. The conference, known for attracting high-ranking political figures and policy specialists, will center on critical foreign policy issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on European and global security .
Martin will also address the situation in Gaza and the broader Middle East, emphasizing Ireland's steadfast support for Ukraine and its commitment to a peaceful resolution based on the UN Charter. On Saturday, February 15th, Martin will participate in an event hosted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy focusing on global food security. Prior to his departure, Martin underscored the significance of the conference in a time of heightened global tension, stating that it provides a vital platform to discuss shared challenges and strategize effective responses. He emphasized Ireland's long-standing commitment to a robust rules-based international order, strong multinational institutions, international law, and fundamental human rights. While Ireland maintains its military neutrality, Martin stressed that this does not preclude its involvement in discussions concerning global security risks and threats. He plans to engage with other leaders on pressing issues, including Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Martin further highlighted the need to work collaboratively with partners to ensure the successful implementation of the hostage release and ceasefire agreement in Gaza and to facilitate an unhindered surge in humanitarian assistance. He also aims to discuss prospects for a lasting peace settlement based on a two-state solution. This Security Conference coincides with German authorities investigating a car attack in Munich that injured 28 people, raising security concerns in the city where the conference will be held.
