Major new report highlights the billions the crisis is costing while our government still “crazily subsidises” harmful fossil fuels

Extreme storms, flooding and a record-breaking marine heatwave were the price Ireland paid for the climate crisis last year and now, the government’s “credibility” on cutting emissions is being called into question.

Both Professor Sweeney and his colleague, IPCC scientist Professor Peter Thorne, have called on political leaders to step up to the plate and “get brave” to meet our legally binding carbon budgets. “Europe is now the fastest-warming continent and climate change is occurring faster than models anticipated,” he added.

“It is high time we got serious about meeting our legally binding carbon budgets, and this report from Copernicus paints a picture of what lies ahead if we don’t.” A spokesperson said: “A total of €4,967,703 recouped in respect of claims received from 12 impacted local authorities.”The 2023 European State of the Climate report highlighted how greenhouse gases were at their highest ever level last year.

Professor Thorne says the State needs to “remove fossil fuel subsidies which, crazily, we still have” and also “crack” socially-desirable alternatives to “things that use fossil fuels”. “Every time you fill your car with petrol or diesel, every time you fill your heating oil or buy a new gas canister or buy gas off the grid, you are fundamentally spending that money... out of the national economy.
