The discovery has left scientists scratching their heads and could herald a new astronomical category

Dozens of objects similar in size to Jupiter have been discovered free-floating in space, confounding scientists and opening up a new of arena of astronomical study., also known as M42 – an enormous cloud of dust and gas from Earth where vast numbers of new stars are being forged. But the objects cannot be defined as a planet either because they are not in orbit around a parent star, leaving scientists scratching their heads about what exactly they are.

One explanation is that these objects grew out of regions in the nebula where the density of material was insufficient to make fully fledged stars, scientists said. The new telescope image is a mosaic of 700 taken pictures taken over a week. Within the image are thousands of young stars, at different stages of development – some with 40 times the mass of our sun, and others less than 0.1 time its mass.
